UNESCO World Heritage Site is actually a site that holds a list of world's most outstanding and remarkable places, monuments, mountain ranges, deserts, buildings, complexes or cities which are nominated for the world Heritage Program. It was administered by the UNESCO that aims to preserve these sites for the future generations. For these sites the funds are released and technical expertise is also provided to preserve them. India is a home to 27 World Heritage sites that include caves of Ajanta & Ellora, Groups of monuments of Mahabalipuram, Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, Humayun's tomb, Kaziranga Wild Life Sanctuary, Sun Temple at Konark etc are few of them. UNESCO has also listed some of the popular toy trains of country like Nilgiri, Kalka-Shimla and Darjeeling Himalayan Railway as world heritage sites.

Only countries that have signed the World Heritage Convention and pledging to protect their natural and cultural heritage can submit the nominations for these properties on their territory. Only these properties are considered for inclusion in the list. These nominated properties are independently evaluated by several advisory boards. Once the final decisions about these properties are made they come under UNESCO world heritage site. Every year the committee meets and decides which sites will be inscribed on the World heritage list.

There are about 890 world heritage sites in 148 countries. Millions of people visit these amazing sites that are well preserved for the future generations.
