Chilka Lake-Orissa

Chilka

Chilka is a salty water lagoon spread over the Puri, Khurda and Ganjam districts of Orissa on the eastern coast of India. It is the largest coastal lagoon in India and is the second largest in the world. The water spread area of Chilka varies between 1165 to 906 sq. km during the summers and in monsoon. It is connected with the Bay of Bengal with a 32 km long narrow channel. Studded with some small islands such as Honeymoon Island and breakfast island Chilka has a unique ecosystem that makes it the largest congregation of migratory birds in the country mainly during the winters. An impressive array of bird life both local and migrants make it a paradise for bird lovers. The high productivity Chilka lagoon eco system with its rich fishery resources is a main source of livelihood for many fisher men who live in and around the lagoon.

There are some other major attractions near by Chilka Lake.

Nalaban Island:- It is a 15 Sq km Island with in the lagoon and is the core area of the Ramsar Designated wetlands. It was declared as a bird sanctuary under the wildlife act in 1973. The island disappears during the monsoon and post monsoon it emerges again.

Puri:- The holy city is famous for Jagannath Temple . The other major attraction of Puri is a beach where you can enjoy the mesmerizing sunrise and sunset.

The Nirmaljhar Waterfalls:- It is situated at a distance of 12 km from Chilka and is a perfect place to enjoy picnics .

Satpada:- Surrounded by lagoons from three sides makes Satpada an amazing picnic jaunt for nature lovers. The Chilka Lake is very well connected by road to Chennai and Kolkata through the National Highway NH 5. Bhubaneshwar the capital city of Orissa has its international Airport that connects it to the various parts of the country.
